Jacquard Dorland's Wax Medium is a versatile, archival-quality cold wax medium made from pure waxes and damar resin. Widely used for sealing, varnishing, and painting, it dries to a durable, waterproof, non-yellowing finish that protects artwork and allows for glassless framing.
Key Features & Uses
Protective Topcoat / Varnish: Excellent for sealing everything from oil paintings to watercolor, gouache, mixed media, and photographs. It guards against moisture, dust, and fingerprints.
Painting Medium: Mix it with oil paints or dry pigments (like Pearl Ex) to create heavy-bodied, fast-drying, and super matte paints perfect for impasto, layering, and palette knife techniques.
Finish: Dries to a matte look, but can be buffed with a soft rag after 24 hours to achieve a uniform satin or high gloss.
Transparency: Varies the ratio of medium to colorant to easily control the transparency or opacity of your paints.
How to Apply
As a Sealer/Varnish: Ensure your artwork is completely dry. Scoop a small amount of the cream-like wax onto a soft, lint-free cloth or gloved hand.
Buffing: Gently rub the wax across the surface in thin, even, circular motions. Leave it rough for a matte finish or buff it later to bring out a shine.
Mixing with Paints: For brush painting, mix 1 part wax medium to 3 parts color; for knife painting, mix in equal ratios.
Thinning: It can be thinned with mineral spirits or turpentine to achieve a glazing consistency
